fairfax county. news4's chris gordon is live in reston where residents are cleaning up this morning. i was out that way yesterday and trees blocked off roadways. it looks like a mess out there now. >> that's right, angie and richard. this is south shore road in reston. the area i'm told got hit the worst. you see the tree chippers and a big crane over here, because this house had a tree fall through the roof into the kitchen. luckily, nobody hurt. if you pan further up south shore road you will see that there is a car up the street, parked at -- it was basically got a karate chop by the tree. these are mature, tall, thick trees. and there's an area where a carport was destroyed. now with us now live and joining us and i hope you can hear us over all the activity seems like midday here. thank you for being with us. this is deputy chief mike riley, fire and rescue. did you get a confirmation on a tornado? >> yes. last year it was confirmed with our communication center that we were tracking on doppler radar what they confirmed to be a tornado. in the chantilly area and then down to the r

weather service saying they had their teams go out and check out those spots in reston and out of fairfax county. and they have so far say there are no confirmed tornadoes. there's no evidence of tornadoes from today, but we did see some rain come through. right now things are much quieter and boy you can feel that cooler and dryer air making its way in. peek wind gusts. ashburn, virginia, and loudoun county getting 69 miles per hour. dulles 63. gaithersburg around 60 miles, and glendale, maryland, around 50-mile per hour wind gusts. tonight as you are sleeping, open the windows if you want. becoming partly cloudy and cool. lows mid 50s outside of beltway to mid 60s in downtown. bruce, back to you. >> anny, thanks a lot. chaotic scene at the prince georges county fair where some people were actually trampled and injured as authorities tried to evacuate an area. 400 to 500 people were gathered at the infield when the storm started rolling through. officials began moving the crowds to shelter in the nearby showplace arena. as the storms got closer, some people panicked. >> obviously

three storm surveys. one in fairfax, one in reston and one in lorton and there is no evidence of a tornado on the ground. >> and that caused a lot of damage. there is some downed lines and tree branches. >> and dangerous, too. >> and some have to be aware of that to be careful. and this is a calm evening after the action and this is where that precipitation is now and across the areas of lower southern maryland. you can see what a big difference. that frontal system passed and i was speaking to will earlier about the fact of the big temperature change, we had a 25 degrees temperature change from 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon. the winds gusting at about 58 miles an hour and a quarter quarter of a mile to a half mile visibility and with that squall line coming through earlier. a lot of things happening here and to the weather map. this system, mentioned, areas up to new york state and look at the line system here. we're not alone at all with the impact of that particular system. and we have wind gusts for you, the peak wind gusts in our airports, 58 miles an hour at national airport;

cruelty trial involving the director of the reston zoo in fairfax county is underway and peggy fox has been in court with it all day. she joins us live from fairfax. what happened on day one, peggy? >> reporter: tell you, what this trial has gone on nonstop. right now it's still going on with their 15 witness. we aren't sure if it will wrap up today. a lot of people are very concerned because the practices of the reston zoo today are under fire in this animal cruelty case. the defendant is megan mogenson, the zoo's director. her father is the owner of the reston zoo. his daughter is charged with animal cruelty in the death of a wallaby, a wallaby named parmesan. we found some youtube videos of other wallabies to show you what they look like. january 26th parmesan was found with a ruptured eye. megan called her father to see what to do and he apparently told her to euthanize the animal. she told police she euthanized the wallaby humanely by injection, but police say she drowned the animal. the responding police officer found the dead wallaby soaking wet and the medical examiner who did

. one of the biggest trouble spots was in reston, especially along south shore road. luckily, no serious injuries. but a large tree toppled and crushed a carport. another tree clipped a house. >> so close inside the house. water was leaking in. so we have water damage inside, which leaked all the way to the basement on the capture. >> about half dozen cars and seven homes were damaged in that neighborhood alone. >>> the storms have been, but potential trouble brewing in the tropics. sue palka is keeping track. >> i wanted you to see high pressure is building in. had a couple of showers here and there to our north. nothing was able to make it into our area. high pressure will be ruling. back to the tropical story, we've had a strong front, and guess what's it's keeping at bay? not that we really expected a visit from what is now tropical storm leslie, but it's getting a push away from bermuda. but they had a rough day today. the airport was closed until 4:00 ask wet and windy. tropical storm leslie isn't the only storm we're watching. hurricane michael has a prominent eye, though

reston where once stately oaks that provided shade are now reduced to so much -- well, sawdust and wood kindling. the cleanup continues from this past weekend's storm. not quite a tornado, but still strong enough to do some damage, and leave stories and images in the minds of witnesses to the weather. >> the sky got very dark. the air was quite still. and then all of a sudden, the trees started just whipping around. and it just started pouring immediately. >> reporter: she took refuge in the basement for a while. >> i stayed there for maybe five or ten minutes, and i didn't hear anything because the house isn't very well insulated. i went upstairs into the kitchen and then i heard like a train whistle sound. so that kind of scared me and i went back downstairs again. >> reporter: in reston and places close by there were close calls and direct hits. some structures left uninhabitable. tree removal crews are busy as well. >> came in, 7:00 in the morning, we had one crew out until 9:15. we're out here until 9:15 working at night, with headlights, up in the crane. >> reporter: and so h

morning from our saturday sudden storms. reston took an especially hard hit on south shore road actually large tree crushed a carport. another clip awed house. in that neighborhood alone, seven homes were damaged. the national weather service conducted a storm survey and says there is no evidence of a tornado touchdown. >> all right. but still a lot of damage that was left behind. people that were without power but got the power back on. >> thank goodness for that. >> i know that inconvenience is not very pleasant. >> not at all. they had enough of that during the june 29th derecho. >> exactly. the satellite-radar composite showing you nothing because we have a ridge of high pressure in control. could be a little bit of fog to the far west over the mountains. that will be out of the way soon when the sun comes up. yesterday's high just two to three degrees off the mark. 79 at dulles. the cold front was very strong. in the 4:00 hour, it was 89 degrees it the dulles and the temperature dropped 25 degrees by the 4:00 hour. the cooler fresh air is here. current temperature, 61 at d.

scene in reston where several trees damaged homes and cars. the weather was bad but luckily, there was no confirmed tornado sighting and no one was seriously hurt. this morning, power has been restored to all dominion virginia customers affected by that storm. you really felt it come in. i was starting to get worried. it just came in so fast and furious but we knew we were going to have that storm. >> that front was very, very strong and we had this real humid unstable air mass so it is like bang, you know. but it was a busy day, let me tell you. it was a very busy day. happy to say things are much calm are now. good weather to at loft get out there and do whatever clean-up needs to be done. we don't have any clouds or anything going on. maybe a little bit of fog to the far west but other than that, we have a ridge of high pressure in control and that will hold us for the majority of the week. yes' highs, just two to three degrees below the seasonal average. average. i want to tell you, on saturday, it was like 89 degrees but it felt a lot warmer because of the humidity. here is a

fairfax county. >> reporter: we're here on south shore road in reston. this is a neighborhood with a lot of tall, very mature trees. in saturday's storm they came tumbling down on tops of cars. you can see the damage done here. you can see a huge stack of broken limbs here. we also across the street have a truck that was crushed by a falling tree. and you can also see the damage done to this house here. the carport collapsed on top of the car here. just a very scary situation for folks who live here in this neighborhood. fortunately, though, no injuries, no serious injuries in this storm. so despite all of the damage, people who live here say that they consider themselves to be quite lucky. they just got a mess to clean up. some damage to their homes. but everybody is okay. now, in terms of the power outages, at the height of all of this, there were thousands of people without power. the good news here is that a lot of progress has been made. and most people are back online. they have their electricity back. we just have minimal outages at this point. in reston, megan mcgrath, news
